8 Unique Facts about Planet Pandora in the Avatar Movie!
After more than a decade has passed since the first film, soon the Avatar sequel film entitled The Way of Water will be shown in theaters worldwide.
Just like the first film, The Way of Water will still take place on Pandora, a beautiful planet full of mysteries and surprises.
Where humans are told as colonists who dredge their natural resources while causing destruction on Pandora.
Before seeing more of its natural beauty in Avatar 2, let's discuss some interesting facts about the planet Pandora.
1. Pandora's Name Adapted from Mythology
Long before humans set foot on Pandora, Earth's astronomers agreed to name the alien planet they discovered after the first woman from Greek mythology.
This name is actually the same as the name of one of the moons of the planet Saturn.
In Greek mythology itself, Pandora is the name of the woman who accidentally opened a pitcher of Pithos, so that the demons inside were released into the world.
Luckily he managed to shut down Pithos before the wish-devouring demon came out.
This is what finally makes humans still have hope until now.
2. Discovered In The Middle Of The 21st Century
Although it wasn't explicitly explained in the first Avatar movie, the original material and supporting books for the film have revealed that human astronomers first discovered the existence of Pandora sometime in the mid-21st century.
The Earth rover first landed on Pandora in 2084.
Fifty years later, in 2139 to be exact, Dr. Grace Augustine is said to be the first human to set foot on Pandora.
3. Most Earth-like Planet
Of the many alien planets discovered by humans, Pandora is the planet that is most similar to Earth.
This is evident from its natural state which is still sustainable and can be inhabited by many living things.
Even though it has a very high carbon dioxide level, so that humans have to use breathing apparatus when on Pandora, the situation is quite feasible for humans to live in.
In his book entitled The Science of Avatar, Stephen Baxter writes "Pandora's gravity is about 80% of Earth's gravity.
Its diameter is about 3/4 Earth, with half the weight.”
4. 1 of 14 Months Polyphemus
Despite its more or less Earth-like condition, Pandora isn't actually a Prime planet.
As a planet that is Alpha Centauri, the closest galaxy to the Milky Way, Pandora is actually a moon of a larger planet, namely Polyphemus.
Polyphemus himself actually has 14 moons, including Pandora which is most similar to Earth.
Just like Pandora, Polyphemus is also named after the giant Cyclops in Greek mythology.
Where he is described as the son of the god Poseidon who cannot see because Odysseus blinded him.
5. Rich in the mineral Unobtanium
One of the reasons why humans ended up going to Pandora was because they were attracted to its natural resource, namely Unobtanium.
By setting up the RDA (Resources Development Administration) on the planet Pandora, they started to extract Unobtanium and didn't care about the destruction of nature.
Unobtanium itself can be used as a renewable energy source which is predicted to be able to save the Earth which is already overpopulated.
Whereas for life on Pandora itself, Unobtanium is described as a very sacred source of mystical energy.
6. Home of the Na'vi Nation
If humans are known as the main creatures of Earth, Na'vi is the name for the main creatures that are on Pandora.
Where in general their physiology is similar to humans, but bigger, has a tail, and also has blue skin.
As natives of Pandora, the Na'vi have tribes that live side by side with nature.
For example, the Omaticaya tribe in the first film is side by side with Eywa in the forest, then Metkayina in the film Avatar 2 is side by side with Eywa in the ocean.
The Na'vi in the film Avatar themselves consider the human race as the invaders of Pandora.
7. There are Strange Flora and Fauna
Apart from being home to the Na'vi nation, on Pandora there are also various kinds of flora and fauna that have strange and amazing appearances and ways of life.
For the fauna themselves, they are direhorse, mountain banshee, thanator, viperwolf, and titanotheres.
Then in the upcoming Avatar 2 movie, there will also be Pandora's marine fauna, such as ilu, skimwing, and tulkun.
As for the flora, there are lots of strange plants, ranging from those that are poisonous to those that give life to the Na'vi.
The difference is that on Earth, the plants on Pandora live like animals that have minds.
8. Luminous At Night
Of the many mysteries and beauty of Pandora in the film Avatar, one thing that makes the planet very interesting is when it glows at night.
Even though there are no lights and advanced technology like on Earth, the Pandora realm has provided sufficient and beautiful lighting for the Na'vi people.
The light is generally produced by animals and plants whose bodies can shine by themselves.
Maybe this is also the reason why the Na'vi have blue skin, because it makes it easier for them to hunt at night.
Those are some interesting facts about Pandora, which is the main planet in the upcoming Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water movies.
