A Story of Friendship, Identity, and Love

Otonari Complex centers on the unique bond between Akira Kuji and Makoto Ninomiya, childhood friends and neighbors whose lives are intertwined in more ways than one.

Akira, often described as “handsome” for a girl, and Makoto, who is seen as “pretty” for a boy, frequently face confusion over their gender presentation.

As they navigate their complex feelings for each other and grapple with their identities, they discover that their friends also harbor crushes on them. The result is a heartfelt, sometimes chaotic, and deeply relatable story of self-discovery and young love.

Behind the Scenes

The live-action series is helmed by director Hiroshi Soejima, known for his ability to balance emotional depth with lighthearted storytelling.

The scripts for episodes 1-4 and 8 are penned by Nishioka to Neil, while Kokeshi Murata takes charge of episodes 5-7.

Adding to the series’ charm is the original score composed by Daisuke Nishimura/DUNK, whose music is expected to enhance the emotional beats of the story.

From Manga to Screen

Saku Nonomura’s Otonari Complex originally serialized in Libre Publishing’s Kurofune web manga magazine from November 2014 to August 2022.

The manga, which concluded with five compiled volumes, has garnered a dedicated fanbase for its nuanced portrayal of relationships and its exploration of gender norms.

Seven Seas Entertainment has been releasing the manga in English, with the second volume hitting shelves in November 2024.

What to Expect from the Trailer

The newly released trailer offers a glimpse into the series’ tone, blending moments of humor, tenderness, and youthful angst.

It highlights the chemistry between Towa Araki and Koko, who bring Makoto and Akira to life, as well as the vibrant dynamics of the supporting cast. The visuals stay true to the manga’s aesthetic, with a modern yet nostalgic feel that captures the essence of the story.

Why Otonari Complex Stands Out
